The Cornerstone Team’s Journey to Eburru

Sometimes, the most meaningful lessons in life are learned when we step outside our familiar surroundings and discover how God is working in the lives of others.

That was certainly the experience of Pearson, one of seven teenage boys who traveled to Eburru, Kenya, alongside their mothers as part of the Cornerstone Mission Team. What began as an opportunity to serve quickly became a journey of friendship, gratitude, personal growth, and a deeper understanding of what it means to follow Christ.

During their visit, the team experienced firsthand the warmth and hospitality of the Camp Brethren Ministries (CBM) community. For Pearson, the kindness and respect shown by the Kenyan people left a particularly lasting impression.

“My time in Kenya was incredible. We got to spend so much time with the Kenyans and learned so much about how God can work in my life and how I can help Him work in others’ lives.” – Pearson

One of the highlights of the trip was a sports camp organized by the seven teenage boys, bringing together more than 400 children from the community. Imagine the excitement of hundreds of children gathering to learn new games, make friends, and spend time with young people who had traveled thousands of miles to be with them!

The team introduced the children to American football and kickball while also joining them in familiar favorites such as soccer, volleyball, and basketball. Between games, conversations naturally developed as the children exchanged stories, asked questions about life in America, and shared their own experiences growing up in Kenya. These moments may have seemed simple, but they created meaningful opportunities for friendship, encouragement, and cultural understanding. For the children of Eburru, it was a chance to feel valued and celebrated. For the visiting boys, it was a lesson in humility, gratitude, and the joy of serving others.

But the team’s impact extended beyond the playing fields. Following the sports camp activities, the boys rolled up their sleeves and helped prepare the foundation for a Paradigm Hope Home, part of an ongoing partnership that provides permanent, quality housing for vulnerable families in the Eburru community. Through this experience, the young volunteers learned that service is not always glamorous. Sometimes it involves physical labor, working together under the sun, and contributing to something whose full impact may only be realized years later.

For the family who will one day call that house home, however, those hours of work represent something significant: the beginning of a safer, more stable future.

Reflecting on his time in Kenya, Pearson shared how the experience changed his perspective on everyday comforts and challenged him to grow in character.

“I learned to be thankful for everything that I have in America, like air conditioning. All of the Kenyan people are so kind and respectful, and it really makes me see what I need to do to change my character.”

His reflection captures something beautiful about Christian missions: the blessing flows in both directions. Those who come to serve often return home having received lessons and encouragement they never expected.

As Pearson concluded:

“From doing a sports camp to helping in construction, I tried my best to glorify and serve God in everything I did. I am so thankful for everyone at Camp Brethren for making the whole mission trip possible.”

We are deeply grateful to the Cornerstone Team, the mothers who accompanied these young men, and everyone who helped make this visit possible. Their willingness to serve reminds us that no one is too young to make a difference in God’s Kingdom.

At David’s Hope International, we believe mission trips offer a unique opportunity to experience the love of Christ in action. Whether through education, construction, healthcare, sports, discipleship, or simply building relationships, every visit creates opportunities for meaningful service and mutual encouragement.

We prayerfully hope God will continue opening doors for more churches, families, and mission teams to experience the work He is doing through Camp Brethren Ministries.
