School Sustainability Campaign Update

In just over three years, David’s Hope has helped enable Camp Brethren Ministries (our partner organization in Eburru, Kenya) to establish a sustainable feeding program, construct a school and orphanage, open a second church, and provide staffing, drugs and equipment for a medical clinic.

The Current Situation

The CBM school serves over 250 children in seven classes from three year-old preschool through third grade.

Each class serves 35 to 40 students from local impoverished families and the CBM orphanage.

David’s Hope provides the capital funding for the physical structure and supports the operating expenses for the school so that the students can receive a Christ-centered education, including:

  • English language classes
  • Daily chapel services
  • Two meals per day
  • Annual check-ups and medical care
  • Books and other school supplies, and
  • Uniforms

The Challenge

As the expenses of this ministry grow, David’s Hope and CBM seek to develop sustainable revenue streams to support the school on an on-going basis.

Families in the Eburru area live in extreme poverty but still pay a small fee for their children’s education.

These fees keep parents engaged in their children’s education; however, they only cover about ten percent of the school’s true operating costs.

Though David’s Hope has committed to funding an additional classroom each year until the school serves students through eighth grade, our goal is for the school to generate enough revenue to cover its own operating costs and be completely self-sustainable by 2017.

The Opportunity

There is a strong preference for a boarding school education in middle to upper income families in Kenya.

The CBM school’s outstanding reputation, excellent test scores and rural setting make it an ideal choice for a boarding school, and the associated fees would subsidize the school operating costs.

The construction of six additional classrooms, in addition to the five that David’s Hope has already committed to build, would allow 200 boarding students to receive an education alongside the 440 local students. This capacity is projected to generate enough annual income to cover the school’s operating costs.

Construction of the 11 additional classrooms, library, community room, dorm for 200 boarding students, and other associated items are estimated to total over $300,000 divided into three phases.

Phase One includes three classrooms, the first dorm, and several other capital expenses associated with growing the school.

Our goal is to raise over $100,000 in 2012 to complete this phase and allow boarding students to begin attending the school in 2013!

How you can help

Here are two ways you can help:

1) GIVE– You can help break the cycle of poverty and give the gift of education to the children of Eburru with a one-time or on-going capital project donation. Click here to learn more about how to provide financial support.

The first dorm will cost $42,500 to build and outfit, and our Phase One classrooms cost $12,000 each. Your support will put us well on our way to the $300,000 goal and empower CBM with the freedom of self-sustainability!

2) PRAY– Please pray for the CBM school students and teachers as they work to provide a quality, Christian education in Eburru. Click here to learn about the most recent prayer requests.

Also pray for wisdom and guidance for the CBM and David’s Hope teams as they fundraise the boarding student sustainability project.
