Big news today in Kenya is a car bomb in Somalia that killed 20 including the Minister of Security. The situation hits home for Pastor Steve as not five feet to my right, Mary is packing her bags to leave for Somalia tomorrow morning on a 7-day medical mission. She is heading into the war zone to lecture and train locals how to set up and operate a hospital operating room. Why? Because there is huge need, given zero medical structure right now in Somalia.

Mary says she (and three others from the hospital) will be traveling with armed security guards at all times, working pretty much 24/7. This came up pretty quick and given today’s news this is a extra tricky situation, as if it being Somalia isn’t enough. Pastor Steve says he is trying to think of a way to keep Mary at home, but she is resolute on going. Please keep Mary in your prayers!

Friends of David’s Hope –
Finally, the day is (almost) here. My flight leaves for London tomorrow night (Monday) around 9p, jets through London a second time, on to Nairobi where Pastor Steve is going to pick me up at the airport. On the phone today, we finalized the meeting point and he assured me “it will be no problem finding you at Jomo Kenyatta airport. There is only one international pick-up point.” It was a blessing to hear his accented voice again! Leave it to my western mindset to worry some about such trivial things. 🙂 I spoke briefly to Mary and then to Pastor Steve. Both sounded tickled pink to have me (and my friend Dan Coffing) coming back to Kenya. Dan is joining for the second half of the trip, just in time for the end of Eburru and Kibera. I don’t think he knows what is coming… God is going to work mightily.

Over the next few weeks, please keep these three prayer requests on your lists, among any other:

1. Serious discernment. A huge part of this trip, as you all know, is to examine Pastor Steve’s re-construction plan and return home 100 percent convinced all donated dollars will be used wisely. This is a must if we are going to start aggressively asking people for large sums of money to pay for the orphanage. Pray that God gives me discernment, and those back here in the states who are going to help me through the process, that we all can understand and read the text and establish a plan that works in phases based on accomplished goals. Pray that we’ll know what to do first, second, third, etc. Pray that we are able to think through everything and that the budget does not balloon too much. Pray that a sustainable business option is found to help fund the orphanage in the future…

2. Strength & focus. Please pray that when a man, woman or child asks for money, loan or ‘sweet’ that I take the right approach. Pray that I (and David’s Hope) does not create an unhealthy dependence. God commands us to serve the poor, according to his word, and to demonstrate his love in tangible ways. Pray that the wrong perceptions do not get in the way of bringing Christ’s message of hope for a better tomorrow on earth and eternal life.

3. Good Health. For some reason, I am a little more concerned this time around about my health in Kenya (and upon my return to the states). Pray that the food that is put in front of my face in Kenya is safe to eat and that good water is readily available.
